Our first two meetings were pretty much repeats since a line of bad weather kept several girls home for the first meeting, at which we made pinch pots and trail mix. At the second meeting we used different ingredients and made more tail mix. We made coil pots and clay animals and talked about scoring, wedging, and shaping clay and how our air dry clay was different from the bisque ware we painted over the summer. We also talked about ways clay pottery is used in everyday life. This was a repeat of a discussion we had at the pottery place this summer (1 girl wasn't there).
At the third meeting we finished the Potter badge by painting our pottery. Some of the girls got it too wet and it melted. Also the clay figurines we made at the previous meeting did not hold together well. Live and learn. The badge was done.
After painting the pottery, we made smoothies to work on our Snacks badge. I had asked my assistant to buy frozen strawberries but she bought fresh instead, so we added some ice to the smooth recipe to bulk it up and cool it down. I had four or five girls per blender and they had to read the recipe and each girl got to measure and add one ingredient. They all got to push the button on the blender. The recipe ended up being:
- I cup strawberries
- 1 banana
- 1/2 cup orange juice
- 1 cup yogurt
- 1 cup ice
Most of the girls enjoyed the smoothies.
Do you work on one badge at a time, or do you plan your meetings with activities from more than one badge at a time?
